ABOUT OUR CHURCH

The prominent place held by SacredHeartChurch in the chronicles of the history of the 20th century American history makes it one of the quintessential ecclesiastic structures known throughout the U.S.  The church was built by Rev. Joseph Murgas and honored by the Pennsylvania Commission with a Historical Marker.  Murgas’ achievements include chairmanship of the international committee to establish the nation of Czecho-Slovakia, and the invention of wireless telegraphy (Radio).  Macaroni visited the church to consult with Murgas. These achievements were honored with two postal stamps in Slovakia and by the U.S. Navy with the U. S. S. Joseph Murgas.

The church contains a treasure trove of original art by Murgas and valued in international circles.  The rare stained glass windows were created by the Tyrolean Art Guild while the “Austrian type” altars and pews are very valuable.  The fame of the organ was established years ago when nationally acclaimed organ recitals were majestically performed.

Contrary to popular belief, statistics in this packet prove that this church is not a dying parish. Many Masses are attended by standing room only crowds.

The parish has fostered many vocations and has given extraordinary financial support to a Catholic elementary school for 99 years.  (St. Stanislaus Kostka closed its catholic elementary school in 1970; Holy Savior Church closed its catholic elementary school in 1995).  As of 2008, this parish contributes the highest rate of school assessment in the diocese to the Scranton Diocese School Board.  It is the largest church building in the North and East End of Wilkes-Barre OUT of the Flood Plain and is highly visible throughout the city.  There is safe, ample parking area and is handicapped accessible via elevator.  The church is a frequent prayer stop for visitors to the GeneralHospital and parish priests are on call 24/7.

Since the time of the Renaissance, the Catholic Church and the Vatican has valued art as a form of praise of the Lord.  SacredHeartChurch is a standing embodiment of this great historical, religious, and cultural legacy.
